about

Music For Bass Quartet is a 35-minute, four movement piece for four upright basses. Lead and supporting voices are non-existent, favoring a group sound in which no single part is extricable from the whole. Each movement is made unique by it’s own specific set of sounds, scattered through time by chance operation, creating fields of ambient, immersive, and unpredictable juxtapositions. Subtleties in timbre, texture, and harmony (both intentional and unintentional) become focal points, melding distinctions between the essential and peripheral.

Movement IV, "Choirs" was used as part of artist Nicolas Grenier's installation "Vertically Integrated Socialism," exhibited at the Triennale Brugge 2015 in Bruges, Belgium. www.triennalebrugge.be/en/detail/24/nicolas-grenier
